A savings account for a girl child earning around 8.2 percent interest a year, with tax benefit under Section 80C
This is a savings account you open in your daughter's name at a post office or bank and put money into every year. It currently earns around 8.2 percent a year, which is more than an ordinary savings account, and what you deposit also counts for tax saving under Section 80C. It is meant for building up money over years for her education or her marriage.
Who can apply
- Account is opened by a parent or guardian in the name of a girl child
- Girl child is below the age limit fixed for opening the account
- Deposits are made every year to keep the account active
What to take with you
- Birth certificate of the girl child
- Aadhaar and identity proof of the parent or guardian
- Address proof
- Photograph of the girl child and the guardian
How to apply
Open the account at any post office or at a bank branch that offers it; the India Post website at indiapost.gov.in lists the scheme and the forms. Carry the girl's birth certificate, as the account cannot be opened without it.
