Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

A zero-balance bank account with a RuPay debit card and ₹2 lakh accident insurance cover

A Jan Dhan account is a bank account you can open without keeping any minimum balance in it. It comes with a RuPay debit card and ₹2 lakh accident insurance cover. It matters because almost every government scheme now pays money directly into a bank account, so without an account in your own name the money has nowhere to go.

Who can apply

  • Any Indian resident aged 10 or above
  • Has an Aadhaar card, or other accepted identity document
  • Does not already have a bank account, or wants to convert an existing account

What to take with you

  • Aadhaar card
  • Passport size photograph
  • Any other accepted identity proof, if Aadhaar is not available

How to apply

Walk into any bank branch or Banking Correspondent point with your Aadhaar and photograph and ask to open a Jan Dhan account. Scheme details are at pmjdy.gov.in.

Rejected or still waiting? Check these first

Most applications fail for a correctable reason, not because the applicant was ineligible. Before assuming you do not qualify, check each of these:

  • Aadhaar details do not match the name given on the form
  • Account opened but never used, so the insurance cover on the card is not active

Still stuck after checking all of these? Tell us what happened and we will help you work out which office to approach.
